New rubber boots- smell

I got a new pair of boots a while back. They fit great. When I took them out of the box they stunk up the whole house with a strong rubber odor. I left them in the garage thinking it would wear off…. It hasn't.

Anything I can do to get rid of it? They have an oily feeling on the outside. Should I scrub them with scent free soap? Or just not use them for deer hunting? If I can smell them from 5 feet away, a deer is going to smell them from the next county over.

I have tried washing them with baking soda before, and it seems to help some. Time airing them out is probably the best though.

In my experience deer don't pay any attention to the rubber smell. I've worn new pair and had deer walk right through. I assume they don't associate that smell with danger.

Wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe spray with some odor mute, leave outside and maybe rub some smashed cedar foliage on them .

I wonder if some rubbing alcohol might help. Works good to get the smell of gasoline off your hands.

Try leaving the boots in the sun for a few days and UV rays will breakdown the rubber smell. After that place them in a sealed container with cedar branches for a cover scent.

Leave them outside for a few days or put them in a storage bin with walnuts with them.

Might try putting a brick in each one and fill a Rubbermaid tub up with water and scent free detergent. Let sit a couple days and just take them out and leave them outside upside down at all times.

My suggestion would be try ozone if you know someone. I have one in East Knoxville if you're close. They're $50 on Amazon and I use mine throughout the year instead of washing each time.

Time is about the only fix for the smell of new rubber. My favorite hunting boots smelled like that for a year or better. The first year I had them I didn't wear them hunting. I wore them scouting and hiking.

Put them over by your neighbors stand and let the smell run the deer to you.

I had some rubber floorboard mats I bought that were like you described. Bad smell and oily feeling. It was a really strong petroleum odor that I couldn't stand. Decided it was a bad batch of rubber and returned them. Got some others that didn't smell like that. It's a very distinctive smell and pungent. I say swap them.

I'd spray some scent killer on them and go hunt.

It basically has to wear off but rub mud all over them and leave it.
