Looking at getting my Son a new rifle. Most likely will be 30.06 although I have thought of .308. Anyway this isn't a caliber question..I've heard talk of the new Ruger American rifle and many seem to like it for the price. I believe it has a floating barrel which is supposed to be good. But I've heard you can get it for less than $400. Also looking at a 700 but kind of doubt you can find em much more at WM for $400 like you use to could. I really like the Tikka T3 as well. Between those and a Weatherby Vanguard ..(throwing that one in there cause a friend says they are a good one and be found reasonable) what would be yalls choice for a good reliable rifle that will last and not break the bank? Thanks.

The vanguard series2 are nice as are the Howa 1500. The Howa would be an upgrade from the vanguard overall (Howa makes the action for the vanguard)

The TC ventures an pretty nice for the money as well.

I'll second the Howa.

same action no doubt. but most of the howas i have seen have a cheapo rubber stock on them. even worse than the plastic stock that came on my vanguard.

The cheap finish is why I went with the browning x bolt micro Midas rather than the Remington for my son, looks like I made a good choice! Of course the browning was $800 and the 700 was $450 so I would expect a much nicer weapon with the browning.

Dumb question I guess....but who makes the Howa? Howa or made by somone else? I know very little about that gun.

Howa Machinery Co makes Howas. The "cheapo rubber stock" is a Hogue stock.

bingo, i love the stocks on the Howas personally.

Will the 700ADL have the cheap finish

THE new adls are just, plastic, matte and crude. the mid 80 adl are blued and walnut and very nice. they command more money that the new adls, but are worth it
