I just moved to 8 acres in maury county. I'm in the country a bit and plenty of farms around. I need to start meeting the neighbors but I really want to set up some deer area in the pasture behind the house. Problem is that its a open pasture with no cover. The land is bookended with some trees and I have seen some deer on the neighbors land but never on mine. Im willing to make a long term investment into getting this to where it needs to be but don't know where to start? Dig a small pond? Plant some trees? Ideally I'd like to be hunting in my own backyard. Can anyone point me to some resources on developing small bits of land to attract?
 
Id lime and fertilize that,plant some dwarf chinkapins and let God do the rest.Chestnuts are great too as well as sawtooths.When it gets where you cant walk through there in the summer that's when its getting good.
 
Plant fast-growing pines for cover.

Also, disk that pasture in late winter and just let it grow up after that. Brush and briers are GREAT deer habitat.

For a tiny property like that, cover will be everything. Now a small food plot in the center would be helpful, but to draw/hold deer on 8 acres, it needs to be 90% cover.
 
Great, thanks guys. A friend and fellow bow hunter suggested I try to plant some apple trees for a dual purpose use of space. What do you all think about that? I'm 34 and don't ever plan on moving so I'm invested in this land for the long haul.
 
Fruit tree plots can be a lot of fun to grow, and they can be very attractive to deer. In fact, you can grow fruit trees in a clover plot.
 
I would let it go fallow and grow into a nasty thicket, will take several years but it's some of my personal favorite deer cover. I like the ideas suggested about planting food trees, then the deer would have food in there as well and wouldn't need to leave. Set up certain stands to hunt and keep the rest sanctuary so you don't drive them out of there....
