guys
I just cleared a 1/4 acre in a thick blowdown area, trying to get a huntable area in the middle of the thick stuff. Cleared and sprayed yesterday. With the standing trees to the south, limited to about 3 hours of mid afternoon sunlight daily. Will be a fire rake, backblower blower, elbow grease application - cant get equipment in. What do you think about buckwheat, white/red clover, and some wheat. Thinking about Sept 1 planting. Any other suggestions or else for a well-shaded, no/low till plot? thanks

Soil test to check for ph, add lime and fertilizer. Winter wheat is probably best - easiest to grow and cheapest. Buckwheat may die with the first frost. Oats are great but die with the frost also. If the soil is acid and you aren't going to add lime, consider grain rye (not rye grass) instead of wheat, it is more tolerable of acid soil which is normal in the woods. Clover won't like acid soil. Rye will withstand the acid and will grow when the leaves fall off the trees and it gets more sunlight. The problem with 1/4 acre is a herd of deer will come through while you at work and when you are there next will see it mowed to 1/4". Rape or turnip added to wheat/rye works well sometimes and isn't touched until after a frost or two.

Thanks guys. There's plenty of food in the area, but this will be the only spot in the middle of the thick! It will be for attraction first
