I've been deer hunting with the same flintlock since the 80's but lately have had a strong hankerin for a new gun. Last week I was at the NMLRA matches in Friendship, Indiana and started stratching that "itch"

Rice barrel, .58 caliber, 1-66 twist, radius bottom rifling, 31" long

Well, Rice barrels are the top choice out there. I love .58s, those things are fun to shoot. Are you building a Jaeger style rifle, the set trigger looks like the Jaeger style triggers?

I'm thinking along the lines of a jaeger but maybe with some American influence. I've built a few guns in my day but just don't have the skill level for the gun I invision. I'm wanting some nice carving and maybe a little engraving.....not too fancy but just enough.

I've got a skilled builder in mind who happens to be a friend. Just need to give him a call. I'm bracing myself for the bottom dollar.

O well...it's only a matters of priorties :)

Might as well build a transitional rifle. Heres my Christian Springs in .58 with a 38 inch Rice C weight swamped smoothbore. Its built with Davis lock and triggers. Its chunky...but balances well. She weighs about 9lbs.

Very nice trapper...and a smoothbore too. Tell me more. Builder? Load? How does it shoot? Have you used it deer hunting.

I thought about a smoothie but obviously went with rifling. My old hunting gun is along the lines of an English halfstock sporting rifle. I'm considering making a shotgun or smooth rifle out of it when I get this one built.

My old gun....54 caliber built by Jack Garner back in the 80s...it's put alot of venison on the table :)

i would love to use a flint lock but don't know how to load it. i guess thats why flint lock are slowly dieing there ain't no one to show us guys who wan't to try it on how to do it. and there ain't no clubs where you can go to learn how. but any way they are vary nice ml you got there. post pics when you get it done. there just ain't no craftmanship in ml no more. i still got the cap lock wobbly and me and my son love shooting it we went out today and had some fun with it.

Good lookin Garner there wobbly! I've got a 11 guage fowler by him that is a real shooter. Ol jack sure knew how to build a great gun. To tell ya the truth I haven't shot the .58 yet. I just got it in the mail yesterday! Lol it was built by Jeff Birkey out of Illinois. I was going to shoot it this afternoon...but the AC felt too good in this heat! I'm going to play with it tomorrow though. My deer rifle is a .50 steel mounted early Virginia by Kent Smith. She likes 70 grains FFFG with a .490 roundball and .15 ticking patch. I ordered some fiber wads and shot cards for the .58 and I'm going to try to load and shoot it without a patch for roundball. I don't know how it will do but we will see.
