New M-70 Looked at...

Looked at one this afternooon at the Chattanooga Sportsman's Warehouse.

They had 2 a 270 and 3006 in the Featherweight 779$ if I recall correctally.

I only looked at the 06.

Nice,but I didn't see all the "Gun Rag Hype" in it.

I didn't see a great deal of difference in fit and finsh over the New Havens,esp the late runs,it was very good.I have seen and shot the formers that were just as good and some that weren't.

The Action was slick but I can't say it was any slicker than any other Classics I have handled.

Some folks complained about the safetys being stiff in working on the late run M-70's,However I haven't encounterd any trouble in them,this was said to have been addressed in these new ones.This one was stiffer than any I have worked but still OK.

Recoil pad is nicer.

Didn't try the trigger though.

The wood does appear to be more closely looked at,very very nice grain as most pics have shown,little difference between the 2.This was something that couldn't be said for the formers,one had to look to find a nice stocked one.Hopefully this will continue as it is a big plus.

Balance and Fells good right up there with the Kimber,as were some late run New Havens.

Now only if it had the been the model I would love to have and I had the $.

Was the barrel crowned or recessed?

Recessed "Target" type all are supposed to have that type.

BTW-
I'am glad you ask as that brings a question to mind I have to yet seen talked about or ansewered by a couple of Win/Browning Reps I have talked to.

Did Winchester Change Barrel Steels with late run New Havens??

Winchester went from the "Rounded" to "Recessed Taget" crowns(seems eveybody doing that) on the late "New Haven's". The target type crowned barrels seems to a different steel type as the rifles feel entirealy different. I can't believe that a change in crowns only would do that,as these rifle balanace better.

I think recessed barrels look cheap. I have shot both types and noticed no difference in accuracy. It just looks shoddy in my opinion. A rifle is and should be a work of art!

the idea of the recessed crown is to protect it from dings,a rifle is a tool plain & simple,some are nice to look at & some aint.i have mostly synthetic stocks,they take bad weather & if they get a ding or a dang in them i can live with it,my ugly savage 110 in 243 & my mod 70 in 300wm dont know their not pretty so please dont tell them :) they might stop hitting where i aim ,mike243
