A friend of mine has a new england 243 single shot with a tasco world class scope. This thing is all over the place when we shoot from a vice at about 80 yards. We took the scope off last year and sent it back to Tasco. When they returned it they did not say if they found anything wrong with it but it still shoots all over the place. Any ideas what we should check next?
 
Try another scope, another load,dont use the vise,clean the gun.I have a 243 handy rifle bull barrel that shoots 1 inch groups all day.I clean after every 10 shots..gun is almost 10 years old and still a tack driver.
 
I had an ultralight like that. Had to send it back to NEF bc the action was very loose on lockup. Even once I got it back its poi would wander a bit based on where you positioned the forearm in your rest/sandbags. It shot good groups with Federal fusion 100gr. IIRC
 
Some shoot minute of angle, some shoot minute of CRAP. Make sure all the action and stock screws are tight. Then take mount, rings and everything off and reinstall with a different scope. Change ammo as well, some are very picky. If that doesn't do it, check the crown of the barrel for any nicks or dents. If that doesn't work, there are a few websites that go into more detail, I think Greybeards site has an H&R forum that will go into more detail. Beyond that use it for a "Mater-stake".
 
Thanks everyone. This gun has a bull barrel and should be very accurate. I'll get him to get another scope and rings. I'll give the barrel a good going over myself and see what happens. I thought his ammo might be old but he bought new and that didn't help. Maybe another brand too

Bought one for my son last year and it's deadly with Remington 100-grain core lokts. I've always heard they start spraying around quite a bit as the barrel heats up so I've never shot a bunch in a row. Two, three max and let it cool a bit and not a moments trouble. Had one in .223 one time and no problems with it either. Good luck.
 
Before you do anything, set the target up about 25 yds. and put it in your vise and look thru the barrel. (clamp vise on forearm of gun and barrel if you must so you can open the action) Make note of where the barrel is aiming on the target. If possible move until the bullseye is centered in the barrel. Without disturbing the way the gun is pointing, carefully insert a cartridge and close the action and shoot it. Repeat at least 2 more times. If the group is still all over the place, it is the gun. if it groups good (within an inch I would think at that range in a vice, taking into account small human error moving gun while firing)then it is not the gun. Then you go about checking the scope base, then rings, then scope.
