Awesome work @KTS ! How bad is the mammoth ivory to work with? I bought some beautiful fossilized, stabilized mammoth ivory awhile back. Kinda been dreading using it. I've read it's prone to cracking when drilling and you have to be very careful about it getting hot while grinding. At $200 for two little pieces, I'd really hate to screw it up!

That looks like cross cut, what I have used I cut with the grain. It is pretty bad about being in layers and it will separate pretty easy. Some of the layers were thick enough to work with for scales and the thin layers I just used to make jewelry, etc.
I really try to not let it get very hot when working with it, just go slow.
Those scales are beautiful, if they have been stabilized you shouldn't have any problem I would think.
I have never had any problem with drilling it.
When you use those please post a picture, they are awesome.

They are beautiful! I need to make something special to put them on…some cable Damascus or something. That's another reason I keep putting it off.
