thinking about buying a new 700 mountain rifle. going between a 7-08 and a 280 rem.need opinions between the two. max distance i will be shooting is 300 yds

Not sure if you reload or not but 280 brass is easier to come by than 7-08 at the moment. Both are great cartridges though.

Okay, I wuz wrong. Actually the 280 is a much better all-around choice and since you hand load you can take it down to 7mm08 levels and up to 7Mag weights. My 16 year old has been loading for his 280 and the results are pretty good.

I would really LOVE a 280 setup to shoot the 168/180 Bergers,,but in reality shooting to 300 yards is pretty simple with just about any caliber you can buy over the counter,,

i have a 270 win. and a 30-06 now, just never owned a 284 cal so its more of a want than a need. :) cant make my mind over the long action vs short

what I would really like is a 284 Win or 7mm RSAUM done in a long action with the freebore set to load the 180 Berger just right

I would lean towards the 280 if most of your hunting would be around fields simply because it can give you higher velocities with the corresponding flatter trajectory making it easier to hit. The 280 is one of the great over looked cartridges.

However, the 7mm-08 makes a lot of sense too and the difference between the two is only realized by a real rifle nut. :)

if I was buying a mtn.rifle I would get the 7-08 it should be a little lighter overall and still have .284 cal. lighter is what a mtn.rifle is about? if you reload you can load the 30-06 to do about anything you want for larger game and with 3 rounds that look alike 270,280,30-06 it would be easy to make a mistake in reloading or just taking the wrong shells on a hunt.

Well I have a Remington CDL 280, it is super accurate and it's my favorite of all time rifles and I have a lot . To be honest I've never done anything custom to it.
I shoot Federal 140 Ballistic tips or if I want to change it up 140 barnes TSX with 57 gr. of IMR 4831, both shoot the same out to 400 yards..

I have no trouble with the 280 it would be a good choice.I just think the ideal of a mtn rifle in 7-08 short action with small scope would be the best choice. but everyone has an elbow. haha

280 brass has the shoulder pushed forward to prevent loading in a 270,,so I am not sure you can make 280 from 06 or 270 but I guess you could make 06 or 270 from 280 brass,,

I would go with the 280 my Ruger 77 has become my go to gun. But they are both to notch calibers.
