new 243 thoughts please

i have a cheap remington 770 243 youth and have got the bug to step up to a nicer rifle. i like playing long range and use it for yotes to deer. the old 770 is an accurate sub moa gun; got the youth model cause i pack through the woods a lot. other than the sloppy bolt and plastic parts i really have no complaints about it. i have the 770 sold to a buddy for his son whenever i find what i want.

now my delima. the heavy barrel models really strike my fancy but like i mentioned earlier i carry it a lot so weight is an issue. i'm thinking about a remington 700 varmit for the heavy barrel and having it cut down from the 26" barrel to 22ish or just getting the little model 7 which will probably be better for my use. although it sounds like i'm stuck on remington i'm open to any suggestions. trying to stay under a grand for gun and glass.

please throw them at me.

The Browning A-bolt Micro is one to consider. They are very light and accurate.

I think the 700 Mountain rifle might make you very happy.
Available in a variety of calibers, and much lighter weight than the standard rifle.
I have one in .270 and absolutely loved it the day I saw it, and still do 9 years later.

Yea the 700 Mountain rifle or the little model 7 would be nice. Why not a 25/06 it will not kick much but will kill deer real good . A nice stainless steel one like this but in 243 or 25/06 would be good.

Not a bull barrel gun, but these Styer Prohunters really shoot and seem very well made. They use Browning A-bolt scope bases.

The Model 7's are great. Like you, I tote my gun more than I shoot it. Got a 243 Youth Model that I re-stocked. It's my "truck gun". Got some improvements planned for this summer. New glass, skim bedding...it shoot's better than I do and I shoot pretty good.
Another one I've coveted is the Ruger Compact. Got the L6 trigger (which breaks good) 3 position safty and a short, thin barrel, 6 1/4 lbs. Comes with the Ruger rings under $600. I like the Hawkeye version (matte blue and walnut).

Love my Ruger Compacts! They aren't really a "youth" gun, as the stock length of pull is only about a half inch shorter than standard length stocks. I'm 6' tall and have no problem with the LOP, but you could add a spacer between stock and recoil pad cheaper than getting a whole new stock. Only complaint is the shorter barrel steals about 150 - 200 fps on your velocity, but that's not much of an affect within 300 yards.

I think you responded to my post when I asked about those rifles. Finally got to handle one at the NWTF Convention. I really like that stock trigger AND the locking bolt and Mauser safety. Nice outta the box package!!

I don't think you would go wrong with either rifle. Remington Model 7's are really holding their value well.
The little Ruger's are reasonably priced and if the older M-77's are any indication, they'll hold their value as well.

remington model 7 (if i stumble up on a stupid deal i've had a model 7 before NO COMPLAINTS it was great but since i've already had one i always want to try something different)
savage 10 predator hunter Max 1

ruger m77 tactical
ruger laminate compact
ruger all weather

As much as I like the Rugers, the new Model 7 CDL is a very nice rifle. I Like it a lot more than the older style. I'm seriously thinking of getting one in 243, since the Compacts will soon be set up specifically for my grand daughters.
