What a morning...does moving thru the field I was watching...and then a solo came thru...and looked behind her before running off...and sure enough a buck came thru....sun hit his antlers and I got positioned to take the shot, got him to stop and watched him drop in my scope. I sat there a moment to make certain he didn't come back to life before I climbed down. I walked over to where he should have been...key word is should...it is a thick CRP, in places over your head. I couldn't find him, did a 2 hour grid search...nothing, not even a drop of blood....I climbed back into my stand, recreated the scene...but came up with the same answer....I noted that one of the trees had a branch that looked like it had been hit by something, so I was starting to think I had missed...but then why did he drop? I thought I heard something struggling in the woods S of the field about a 100 yds away...didn't sound like a squirrel, so I walked into the woods and didn't see anything, other than leaves that were in disarray...but no blood, but I followed this "trail"....I didn't want to get my hopes up, but I slowly walked and saw him in a dried up creek bed.... he tried to stand up, so I finished him. Zero blood except where he was bedded....my bullet hit that branch and deflected into his spine, breaking his back...not sure he moved 200 yds from where I shot him to where I found him. When I gutted him all the blood was in his cavity.
Lesson learned, I didn't feel the tree was in the way...should have let him step away a couple more steps...even if it meant him exploding to chase the doe and not getting the shot

. He is a solid 8 with a kicker and took me almost 2 hours to get him back to the truck.
