Never been duck hunting...

I have been thinking about trying it. Is there anybody in the Davidson/Rutherford area that could let me tag along? I own waders and a gun. I would like to tag along and learn about the setup, calling, decoys, etc. I am off in the middle of the week if anyone could use/tolerate a guest.

My best advice is not to go. You'll like it and spend way to much money on it :D

I duck hunt a little when im not deer hunting. Its fun but can be expensive but if its something you enjoy you dont mind it to much.

Everyone keeps telling me it is too expensive. What is the highest cost factor, the shells?

Decoys, clothes, calls, boats, land, dogs...It can be as expensive as you want to make it. Believe me, even if you go on public land, retrieve your own birds, and wade to your spot those shells will be the least of your worries. I definitely still recommend it!

I have a duck boat that I use for fishing. I can see how it can get expensive. I know deer hunting has! Thanks for the input.

Depends on how many ducks you want to kill.

I enjoy the fellowship of being in the duck blind or on a hunt with friends. I often duck hunt in the morning and deer hunt in the evening (or vice versa).

For me deer hunting is a solo sport I enjoy, but it's good to get in on a all out fun quack attack.

have got the itch also & don't know jack about the quack.left deer hunting several years back(health)..sure would like to give it a try. all guided trips on reelfoot are for at least two-three in a group.

Doesn't have to be expensive if you have the right friends/connections. I have a friend that hunts at reelfoot. No waders required, he has a dog and he calls. Now he has spent time and money training his dog, he spends time in the summer up keeping his blind, gas for travel, etc...

I use my deer hunting clothing while duck hunting. I invested in a floating blind bag and floating gun case. I have an old 1100 that kills ducks just as good as a benelli. You can spend as much as you want on all the 'fixins', but you don't have to.

I'd recommend going with a guide and just ask a lot of questions and pay close attention to him.

good advise jb3 . am corresponding with a guide since i last posted because of good folks on here suggesting guides . plan to line up a trip soon. weather is always a crap shoot.

You can keep it on a budget if you want or need to. I already had gun so I just needed waders, a couple of calls and few boxes of shells. All in all I think I spent about 300 to get started. I do the blind hopping on WMAs and do fair on killing. I don't have any decoys so I have to go where others already have them out.

It is addictive but I'll never give up deer hunting because of duck. I haven't got my KY buck yet so I'll be going to KY this weekend instead of duck hunting.

Booked a 2 day for next fri & sat with Steve McCadams out of Paris .
Took the new Winchester SXP out today & busted 20 out of 25 clay birds. Lordy that felt good !

I havent deer hunted one time this year because of duck hunting.

Between hunting early duck and goose and getting blinds built i didnt have time and now season is open no deer hunting for me
