Well, it has been a great season at our land, despite the surrounding CWD issue. My 10 year old nephew got the bug last year and wanted to start going out hunting this year. We worked on aiming, shooting, being quiet, finding deer sign, the whole deal leading up to November. He has had some hard sits. 3 times we went out he sat with his Dad and I shot a deer each time, they saw nothing. Every time he and I went out we didn't see anything, except one evening walking out when we saw a really nice buck too far to shoot. I figured he was done, but he wanted to go out one more time last night.
About 5pm we had 4 does walk out into the field to our left. He got settled in and found them in the scope, but his nerves got the best of him and he started getting shaky and nervous so I sat him down. We watched the deer for a minute, he calmed down, and got back on the gun. He picked out his deer, the old Savage boomed, and the deer dropped in her tracks. There was even enough time after the shot for Uncle Duck Duck to get in on the action and we ended up dragging out 2 does!
I'm so proud of this boy it's hard to tell ya'll without writing a book. He's a good kid and this was a big achievement for him. On the flip side my wife and I do not have kids so my nephews and nieces are pretty special to me. To be able to share this with him, and do something that I did not get to experience as a kid...ya'll it made my year.
He also got to meet a TWRA officer at the Ames check-in which he thought was "super cool". I didn't get the officer's name, but if any of ya'll happen to know this gentlemen please pass along my sincere thanks for him taking time to do a photo op!
