Needing you experience and help...

Ok...I have a peice of property that use to be a honey hole for turkeys...What I have is a 5 acre feild on top and at the end of a long ridge...The turkeys are here thats not the issue...I want to plant something this year for the deer and turkey to better the land owners property...The issue is the horses...I quit hunting back there because the horses kept eating my decoys...Yeah they are very curious and will come over and pick up my decoys and run around with them... As you would be too I get pissed throw things at them and does no good...Anyway I will work something out with the owners this year about that...

What would you guys plant to better this ridge feild...Keep in mind I want to better the feild for the land owner for the horses but my main concern is the deer and turkey attraction...Any ideas...

Aaron,.. now this is a tuff one. When dealing with horses you are dealing with a much more delicate stomach and digestive system. You would have been better off with cows in this situation. Plus,.. its a ridgefeild,. will not hold moisture very well. Those 2 things are really working against you.

The best option you have ,if you wish to persue it, would be a KY bluegrass,timothy,white clover,red clover mix. With this mix you can get the best of all worlds for that situation. The clovers are highly preferred by deer and turkey,.. but the horses wil stil eat them also. The timothy will be eaten by the deer and horses. KY bluegrass would be primarly for the horses. On the ridgetop,.. the red clover will help in the mix if the weather becomes dry.

Do not use any cereal grains such as wheat or oats. Horses will go fallow if they eat to much and will kill them dead as a hammer. I also do not recommend any brassicas for the same reason. The sugar content becomes to high after frost and will damage the digestive system.

Dang Jerm...You are a walking almanac...Cool...I am going to talk to land owners and see if I can fence off an acre for a deer food plot...That should allow me to put out anything I please...But my main concern is turkey for spring...

If you can fence,. go with a clover/chicory mix. Don't even bother with chufa. Even though its a VERY popular planting for turkey,.. its useless in our soils around here.
