Need to learn about redears

I want to catch some shellcracker / redear.

When they are on bed I can catch them.
When they are not, well I am having very poor results chasing them on my local lake.

My son laughs and says I am the only person alive that will "bass fish" for bream. :)

Lake is 175 acres and has a good population of shellcrackers.
How do I catch them in the fall / winter when they aren't on bed?

Any ideas / tips would be greatly appreciated.

Join fishingtn.com and read posts by AlphaHawk. He fishes TWRA Lakes, Pickwick and other places often targeting bluegill/shellcracker on light tackle.

I think one thing to do is fish areas where bluegill are except deeper/closer to the bottom to target shellcrackers.

I use to catch a bunch trolling just fast enough to keep my bettle spins off the bottom in 6 to 8 foot of water. I'd stick a rod out each side of my 1 man boat and troll with 6 pound test... 8 from time to time.

If i was targeting them with live bait it was a redworm that i hooked 2 times close and let hang off the hook. That's just the way i was taught. It worked in the little lake here... fished a little deeper, almost on the bottom in the same depth range as above. Of course the lakes deepest area was about 15 foot so it was an over all shallow lake.

There is a way you can set it up so that the first response is at the top. I can't remember how but it is in the settings.

Alphahawk is the man on that board when it comes to catching gills and shellcracker. Just ask and he will tell you all you need to know.
