I am going to buy a new barrel for my Optima Elite, I am just not sure what caliber to go with.
I want something that will kill deer size game, but will not be too hard on the shoulder. My wife will also be using this rifle so I want a light recoil round.

I was leaning torward the .243 my self.
Shouldnt be too much recoil for her and it will get the job done on a deer.

243 is what I would choose, especially if you don't reload. Ammo is fairly inexpensive and readily available in most sporting goods stores.
 
243 has less kick & less drop at longer ranges than alot of the other rounds listed,55-100 grain on shelfs all over the USA for a reason :) mike243
 
7mm-08 wins with me. I know a friend whose boys have grown up using that caliber with no problems from recoil. Plenty of ammo is available at any good sporting goods store.
 
Any one of the 243,308, and/ or 7mm-08 even the 30-06 w/ reduce recoil loads feels like a 243....Heck I will sell you a 6.5x55 Sweed that I'm having issues with.. :grin: J/K
 
it depends on what low recoil means to the shooter,243 8 lbs & change,70-8 12lbs & change,what good does a heavier bullet due,some folks think a pass thru is what kills deer,:) stir stir ,as long as its 243 or larger very few folks have any trouble finding deer that were shot in a half way decent spot,any smaller cailbur & shot placment starts to mean a lot more.spctbone she can shoot my 243 & see how bad it kicks then if somebody has a 7-08 she could test then let her make her mind up,mike243
 
Jackie, you saw what Marsha's 243 did to the 300+ pound hog. One shot in the boiler room and down. That should be enough to make an informed decision.
