Food Plots Need some recommendations for a fall winter plot

When I get this field cleared within the next week. I will rake it down but all I have is my boxblade for the tractor to do that with. Probably want to do strips or squares with space between the food plot(s). What would you guys recommend for either and what seed to put down? Looking for a fall/winter crop. And once seeding would you recommend running over it with a drag, I can make one of those up with some chainlink I got and drag it with the 4wheeler.

Oh and seed recommendation where do you get it from?
 
Can't go wrong with winter wheat, cheap and easy to grow. Winter peas work well and turnips too. With the equipment you have, I d spray with gly and get a good burn and then wait to plant just before a good rain. If you are doing the plot for deer, I'd wait till September before planting, August can be too hot and too dry to get a plot established.

Yes plot is mainly for deer, there is no crop farming around me for miles so hopefully this plot(if successful) will draw in even more deer. GLY(or what brand) and how long between spraying and planting. I agree plant in sept but hadn't thought of spraying weed killer before hand. Should have this ready to spray in the next 10days or so. But then when should I plant?(considering I put weed killer down) I'm thinking the crop as winter wheat and peas. If I get those out by mid sept would that be a good fit for bow season and on into rifle season?

ETA: My apologies for the newbie questions to food plots, wealth of info already in this subforum..got lots of reading to do.
 
Give it a minimum of 2 weeks after mowing to spray, then 7-10 days after spraying to sow. That will give you the opportunity to touch up what you miss. Start clean, stay clean.

wheat is fine as long as its awnless or beardless but a mixture would do better. A mix of rye grain with jerry oats not forage oats with a white clover and a little radishes the ground hog or forage will do wonders or the rotate crop of radishes and turnips with white clover is fine too. These mixes will give you a spring food plot till you disc next fall for the next plot and help fertilize you fields for your next planting

I need to contact the coop see what they got for a food plot mix.
 
your right do not buy ready mix they have things mixed in that need different planting dates and seed you really don't need. The co-op has the beardless wheat call their main office and talk to the man over the seed he knows what you need if the local office doesn't know. Go to outreach outdoors they will give you some real advice that really works and you want have to do what many of us here have had to do. Ive tried everything under the sun taking advice from experts that really were not including the high priced seed companies with their bag of magic seeds
