Need Some Help !!!

Looking at Varmint guns and need help. I was looking at different brands but I am fond of the Remington 700's. They have a tactical version in .223 with a Hogue pillar bed stock & 20" heavy barrel. My question is with such a short barrel, what would be an effective killing range 250-300? I think the shorter barrel would be more manuverable but would rather have the accuracy in the long run.... then it looks like the varmint version with factory vented stock and 26" heavy contoured barrel is the next option.

Take a look at the Tikka's. Got one now in .223 had one in 22-250 both tack drivers.

I personally would get a longer barrel over the short. I have owned Remington 700's all my life and consider them the best. But I have been looking at the Savage Mode12 LRPV.

I met a guy shooting one of these at the range and he let me try it out. It was in .204 and the group I shot was less than a quarter of an inch for 3 shots @100yds. The trigger was incredible and the rifle just had a good feel to it. Check out the Savage before you buy the Remington you might like them also. I think it will be my next purchase but I like the .223 since it is what I reload the most.

short barrels being inaccurate is a myth,,only thing length gets you is velocity,,and then only to a point.

I bought the same rifle you're talking about last year. You won't sacrifice any accuracy with the shorter barrel but you will lose a tad of velocity and along with that range. 5 shot 100 yard groups with the 69 gr. Sierra ran .662, .701, .775, .769, 1.373, .714, .702, and .476. Those were all with two different powders and varying powder loads. 200 yard groups were all between one and two inches. I only worked with it a tad last summer. I've got some loads ready as I write and the first warm calm day I'm gone to the range to see if I can improve. The SPS tactical has a fast twist barrel and so far mine has shown a preference for either the 68 gr. Hornady HPBT or the 69 gr. Sierra Match King. I'm trying some variations with the Match King and bought some 50 gr. Hornady VMaxs just to try a lighter bullet. I really like the rifle. The trigger will adjust easily to a reasonable pull. It needed a little extra clearance on the stock forend but 5 minutes with a rotary tool solved that. It really carries nicely.

A short barrel can actually be more accurate due to less whip. That's one reason target barrels are so thick.

What powder loads were you using with those bullets, if you don't mind me asking? what twist rate is your barrel? I'm trying to work up some good loads for my AR.

The powders for those loads were 24.4-25.0 grains of Varget for the first 4 groups in Winchester brass and 24.6-25.2 grains of W748 in Lake City brass for the second 4 listed. All were with the BR4 primer. That's with a 1 in 9 twist barrel, 69gr. Sierra MK with all seated .010 off the lands for a COL of 2.302.
