On my property I have a small foodplot about 1/2 acre .The whole area surounding the plot used to be an ag field ,but has been growing up for about ten years. The area surrounding the plot has twenty or so sawtooth oaks in it . The sawtooths, at my best guess are around 10 years old . There is also mostly sweetgums and ash chokeing them down alot . the trees around the edge of plot are producing great ,but the crowded,oaks don't do as much,
So as it sets the area is sorta thick and the deer like it,that way ,but they also like the acorns, Should i thin the area out on the side with the sawtooths so they can reach there potential ,or should i leave it thick and just take care of the top producers around the edges. If i thin the one side out it will still be thick on two sides. Also the area im talking about thinning is about 1/2 Acre and has about three rows of mature sawtooth about twenty ft apart(about 15 hidden trees that dont do much now) What would you do??
one option im thinking about is hack and squirting the udesirables and just leaving them there ,that way it will stay thick ,but the undesirables won't green up and the sawtooths can take over.
