Today driving home I see a red tailed hawk dead on the side of the road that had been hit by a car. Dead animal laying in road drawled me to this conclusion and the fact that it had a broken back. I call TWRA and asked what I needed to do to claim it. They told me basically you are not allowed because it is federally protected. But it's dead and going to rot and I did not kill it. The guy said too bad and that's just the way it is unless you r going to donate it to a school for training purpose.i said ok I will then what do I need to do. Call this number and talk to this guy and see if he will help you. I call and get his voice mail that states he will be in and out all week. What should I do?

You can literally go to jail for possession. Federal Offense. Can't even pick up a feather in the forest.

So I should just let it go and forget I saw it. Didn't realize that serious. What a shame. Thanks:(

Yep! I hit an owl with my Dodge Ram one time and it wedged between the grille and front of the fender. I had no idea what I had hit, and pulled over to inspect. I had broken it's neck and killed it immediately, but it was still in perfect shape. I entertained keeping it for half a second, and then I thought of the stories that I had heard about the consequences... It stayed on the side of the road.

I picked up a roadkilled screech owl and got permission from USF&W to have it mounted but had to donate it to a school or museum. I still have that permission letter around here somewhere.
