Want to add a depthfinder to the front of the boat for when I am running the trolling motor. Trying to learn how to fish deeper points and drop offs.

1. Need a recommendation on brand + model. Don't need GPS or nav on the bow unit, just a good depthfinder.

2. Mounting options. How and where do you mount the transducer and where do you put the view screen?

3.Can I run it off the trolling motor battery (in the bow) or do I need to run power off the starting battery (stern of boat) ?

Thanks!!!

1.) I just have a two decent depth finders to find changes in depth, honestly couldn't even tell you brand name.

2.) my depth finder up front is mounted on stern and transducer is on my trolling motor.

3.)I would not run it off the starter battery, would rather my trolling motor battery run down than my starter battery.

I have a Lowrance mark 5x pro at my trolling motor and humminbird 798 at the steering wheel. Both mounted with ram mounts, love the ram mounts. Both run off of my cranking battery. get the right cranking battery and you will not have any problems. I only run my trolling motor on the batteries for it. Just buy the largest dual purpose battery you can get for your cranking battery. I run 2 depthfinders, a stereo, aerator, when needed runnning lights and led blue light in livewell, etc. off of mine and have never had an issue.

i have 2 lowrance models dont care for either

my buddy had an eagle model and it was real good

i run both mine off the starter as well (well that is the way triton wired it) one batt for trolling every thing else on starter battery

Lowrance and Eagle are the same thing. If you follow the forums though, people are having a lot of trouble out of their newer units right now and it seems they are very dissatisfied with the customer service (or lack of) that they are getting.

Dad just got a Humminbird 598 HD SI unit. It's a small screen unit but the side imaging stuff is just mind blowing. If for nothing else, the colored 2D sonar is amazing on it. But now for the bad...he's had it a few days shy of a month, and the GPS part already went out on it...which makes the side imaging worthless. You can still see the stuff...but you have no way of marking it now. So it went back to Humminbird today.
