From the experts:
"
The best time to prune apple trees is in the winter, promoting tree growth during the growing season. Apple trees that have reached desired size can be pruned in summer, hindering future growth.
"

I always did it around the middle of January. Has the tree shown any signs of buds?

No, not yet. I have about 10.

However, a BIG sugar maple in the backyard has buds all over it. That's why I was worried it might be too late.

Thanks for the reply.

I will prune some fruit trees anytime I get the urge. Of course it depends on how much you want to prune it. Right now I will only make small cuts. I have around 70 fruit trees and have learned a lot over the years, still learning. Like stated best time is before green up.
