Need advice!! 9point Found him!!!!

My dad got to bow hunt for the first time in 2 years. I set him in my new spot this morning. He shot at a nice 9 point. He thought he missed but when he got down there was some not a lot of blood on the arrow. We went to where he stopped and for a second and found blood. Tracked pretty good blood for about 60 yards. He jumped up and stared at us for a minute or 2. Then he trotted off. There were a few good spots of blood every 5-6 feet and there were dime sized bright red blood spots about every 3 feet.

It's been almost 2 hours since we bumped him. How long should we wait? Should we try to get a tracking dog? This will definitely be his biggest buck ever. I really want to recover this deer for him!

i don't. the way he looked at them and just trotted off tells me he's not hurt too bad. bright red blood does NOT indicate a liver shot. it indicates muscle hit. i would still go look but i think he will be fine

I wouldn't think it would bed down so close to where it was shot either if it were just a flesh wound. I've shot and missed or stumbled upon big bucks and when they spook they dang near leave the county!

We went in at 2:45 straight to where he was bedded before. There was 3 patches of blood that was dried up but not much. We could not find any blood on the trail where he trotted off at. We slowly walked another 50-60 yards and bumped him again. He jumped up and ran (slowly) about 25 yards and then real slowly walked away. He was walking like he was hurt. All 4 legs looked really stiff. Watched him walk about 65 yards and couldn't see anymore. We backed out and going back tomorrow after church. There was some but not a lot of blood in the second bed. But there were tons of ants allover the blood where he was laying.

I had my pistol and he had his bow, but we could not get a clean shot on him. I really want to retrieve this deer as it will be my dad biggest buck of his life! It will definitely be a long night of hoping,praying, and shoulda coulda wouldas!

The ants will eat up all the blood. My buddy shot one a few years ago and the ants did the same thing. We just followed the trail of ants and found the deer. If you've jumped it twice id definitely wait overnight. Usually if you jump then up you never see them again but from the sounds of it the buck is hit pretty good since he's only running a little ways and bedding down again. I think you'll find the deer just check all the stick stuff real well and if there is any water on the property he'll run to it. Good luck!

I think you'll find this deer. Let us know where the shot was. The way he is acting I would say gut but your not finding any gut in the blood.

you cannot legally shoot that deer with a pistol

you cannot legally shoot that deer with a pistol

If you don't have a carry permit, it was illegal for both of you to have the pistol along. If you do have a carry permit, it is legal to carry, but 100% illegal to use on any deer, included wounded, during the archery or muzzleloader seasons.

I do have a carry permit, and thanks for the heads up about using it though!

There was no foul smell on the arrow. That was the first thing I did when I saw it. The arrow had a thin layer of blood on the end of it but Althea broadhead and about 5 inches was covered in mud from where it went into the ground.

Im not one to distinguish precisely what shade of red he/she is describing. Typically speaking bright red blood with bubbles is typical of lung and without bubbles could be heart or even superficial flesh wounds as you described. However, his description of the how the deer was acting is totally non-typical of a superficial wound. Its actually more accurate of a abdominally hit deer. Taking into consideration the actions of the deer and the blood i would speculate the deer was quartering, the arrow struck far back (into the liver) and punctured a lung. This can result in bright red blood, without bubbles, and be lethal. You must give the deer time to die.

Going strictly by blood color alone is often not enough, the actions of the deer and shot placement tell the rest of the story.

Sounds like this buck was liver/gut hit and you will probably find it if you wait. I read some other comments on here and I agree with several about it being a serious wound or he would have gotten clearly out of dodge, especially after the second bump. I would get dogs if necessary. Hope you find this one before the yotes do.

I'm thinking liver shot. I bet you find him in the morning.
I liver shot one once and it ran 30 yards and looked back at me and just walked off. Bumped him about 50 yds up a trail and backed out. Found him the next day not far from where I bumped him the first time.

Wow...a BUNCH of speculation here. Some really good info. Some not so good.

In reality, it is VERY hard to judge based on the minimal info we have at hand.

If I could see the arrow, blood, and other things, maybe I could help.

Face time actually works quite well in this situation.

Bottom line, I ALWAYS leave suspect gut shot deer for a LONG time. Often overnight.

We found him!!! He was 100 yards away from the second place we bumped him yesterday! We walked by him twice and never saw him. He curled up in a some brush from a fallen tree. We were about to give up when I spotted his tail. Yotes never got to him and I did not use or even bring my pistol! Lol

The shot was very low and back. Entrance was about 2 inches in front of his back leg and exit was center of his guts. Entrance and exit were both sealed up and he did not have any blood on him at all. He is my dads biggest buck to date! I hate that the deer suffered but it was a great weekend of us spending time in the woods together!

I was able to harvest a doe this morning prior to looking for his buck. 25 yard shot and put it right through her lungs. She ran 50 yards and tipped right over. Thanks for all the advice, jokes, and interest in this thread.
