Were all native whitetails extirpated from tennessee prior to the stocking efforts of the mid 20th century? If so, what would the physiological differences be between the native whitetails and the newcomers, if any?
No there were still some deer here in Fentress. Ive heard they were alot smaller racked. Like mostly basket racks, I know a fellow that has some antler collections that are supposedly from the original deer but you know how that goes. Lots of guys still deer hunted here during those times, they just did it with dogs.
I'll bet you would be hard pressed to find any of the "restocked" genetics still in our deer. Most of the physical attributes we see in TN are pure Southern Whitetail (virginianus virginianus subspecies).
