but hey the honey is still an awesome byproduct and they do a good job pollinating the almond trees in cali.

Most people dont know this, and if you listen to the chicken littles screaming that the world is ending, you never will, BUT honey bees ARE NOT NATIVE TO NORTH AMERICA. Which means, up until WE brought honey bees here from Europe the native insects took care of pollination just fine.

another thing to remember, honeybees can outcompete native species especially if too many hives per apiary that an area can support.

Yup but can't get honey out of a bumblebee

We have had great native bee activity in the garden this year. Last year we had several honey bees show up as well. We are guessing from our neighbors who have 3 or 4 hives. They live pretty good distance away but not to far for bees I'm told. This year the same neighbors planted a couple acres of buckwheat and they said the bees love the blooms. We swapped a couple jars of homemade peach preserves and apple jelly for a jar of their honey and its delicious!!
