I actually know what it is, but I thought it would be fun to post the question. They are on my tomato plants. Or at least they were.

I used to pick them and take them to the sidewalk or driveway. The heat makes them uncomfortable. The move pretty quick.

My Wife did not want to spray so she grabbed a hot pepper and squeezed the juice on one. They don't like that, either.

They can eat like nothing I have ever seen. Biggest one I have found was nearly 4 inches long.

Tobacco hornworm....they love tomatoes too. Tomatoes and tobacco have some genetic kinship.

Tobacco hornworm - Carolina sphinx moth - manduca sexta, picked 2 off my plants today. One had parasitic wasp cocoons all over it. I used to raise them to adult moths, they are cool looking. But can destroy a tomato plant.

yep both are of the nightshade family, as are potatoes, tomatillos, peppers, eggplant

Manduca quinquemaculata AKA The tomato hornworm (a close relative to the tobacco hornworm) it is the offspring of the 5 spotted hawkmoth.

They seem to be a very big problem this yr. I never had them in my garden in 30 yrs of planting, this yr. I was infested with them. Them and squash bore worms, lost my entire squash crop to those rotten little buggers.

never seen a m quinquemaculata in person myself. Only seen m sexta and always on the maters.

have you seen the tiger swallowtail caterpillar? Talk about fake eyes.

That is a tomato defoliating worm. They are very efficient at it.
