Mystery model 700

Just bought some guns from a friend who'd rather have the cash. One is a Remington Model 700. It has a beautiful walnut Montecarlo stock with cut checkering and scroll work. The stock has black accents. The rifle is blued. The odd part is that it's a 6mm Remington. Never seen one before accept the Varmint Sendero rifle. Looks like the date code is 1972. Any idea what this is? I'd like to sell or trade it for something useful but have no idea what it's worth. No mention of it in the model 700 history.

sounds like a good ole BDL. the 6mm rem was fairly popular back then as competition for the 243 Win.

As far as it's value, all depends on condition. I'd say in the $400 range it'd sell in a heartbeat (in excellent condition), and top dollar would be around $550.

Yep, I've still got a 700 BDL in 6mm remington.

I wouldn't let mine go at all, but don't take a penny less than $500.

having said that, I'll give you $400 tonight on my way home from work.

I took it apart for a good cleaning and didn't notice any real wear. It has a jeweled bolt that's moves like butter. The stock has a few small dents and the black caps are delaminating a bit. Overall a beautiful rifle which is why I don't want it. I'm waaaay too rough on guns for this kind of stock. It has a Japanese scope I've never heard of. Maverick. Looks good but probably a 1970s el cheapo.

I'm not familiar with the CDL, but probably just a new designation.

does the bolt lock with the safety or not???

If the date code is '72, it should lock with the safety, and no owners/warning stamped on the barrel.

Mr. Big, If you got the $425 you've got dibs. I figure $400 is fair on a quick sale. Especially since no shipping or FFL would be involved.

My book says with the scroll works and cut checkering 100% - $630,98% - $515,95% - $425. Hope this helps.

Rem introduced the 6mm Rem in 1955 . It was called the 244 Rem at that time.The Rem in both designations 244 and 6mm Rem are based on the 7x57 mauser case.
Rem changed to a 1x9 twist from the original 1x12 when it renamed the cartridge in 1963

Win. also introduced the 243 in 1955 The 243 had a faster twist and stabalised the heavier bullets better than the Rem .
The Win is a necked down 308 case.



The Rem has slightly more case capacity than the Win and will shoot a tiny bit faster , But not enough to brag about.

If I ever decide to have a barrel made for the old Savage in 6 mm it will either be a 6 mm tcu or the 6 mm Rem.
