My son wants to shoot 1000yds

I don't know why, he just does. The subject started by asking him what he wanted for Christmas and his answer was a rifle. That lead to asking him why he wanted another rifle(he has an AR) and he said he might want to go deer hunting. He can hunt with the AR. That's when he said he wanted to shoot 1000yds.
Got him a rifle. Ruger American Predator 6.5 Creedmoor.
So now the question I have is about a scope?
We know nothing about long range scopes so MOA vs MRAD isn't important since we will be learning from scratch.
Budget is important, trying to stay around $500-$600 if possible, without having to hide something from the wife. And I figure it will be possible to get a good deal around Christmas.
Right now, my first prospect is a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50. Currently on sale now for $499, about $450 off.
I know I've said "we" a lot, but I figure that this is a hobby that he and I could do together. When he was born, I was working as an over-the-road driver and him growing up, we didn't have many of the same interests.

That would be a good starter scope just make sure is a ffp. If he's got a ar if it's a ar10 I would suggest upper, or a remington 700 sps heavy barrel in 6.5cm or 308

He's got a Ruger American for Christmas. If he's going to take shooting serious, we'll upgrade.

That's a good deal on that scope but it's a gen 1 scope and MRAD vs MOA. That relates to the adjustment and reticle. If you are interested in the latest model vortex viper pst FFP gen II scopes, I have one for sale in the classifieds. Mine comes with rings and level and still less than a new one.

That should be plenty of scope for ringing steel at 1000 yds.

Get him a 20 moa rail good set rings , you should be able to adjust trigger without buying one. If it will not turn down put a Lil heat to it each side about 10 sec and it should come on down only seen 1 that would not adjust. Good ammo out there

Look at a swfa 3-15. 15x is plenty for 1000 and the swfa scopes are tough, reliable and repeatable. They will run about 699 but will be much more reliable than the gen1 viper.

Get a SWFA 10x42 Super Chicken. Use the rest of your $ to buy rings, base and bullets.
I have these on a couple of 22's and shoot 500 yards on steel with them.
Mils are easier to work with (for me) than MOA

In that price range, any of the SWFA scopes and potentially a used SWFA HD 5-25 would be excellent choices, as well as the SHV line from Nightforce. I shoot a lot of long range and would not recommend a Leupold or Nikon.

Besides the included rings being to high ive read good things about these scopes for the price I would risk it, the glass is supposed to be great just make sure you get a gen 3

I have two of the Gen 1 PSTs (4-16 & 6-24) I have one on my .300wm and the smaller on my .260rem. Ive hunted with the 6-24 on my .300 for 6 years now and the zero has not moved a bit through many shots. Ive never shot 1000 yards, but have 500 and have killed several deer in the 300 yard range with those scopes, no complaints.

IMHO 15x on the top end is not enough. Im still running a vari x III on my ultra mag in 8.25x25 and I couldn't see doing it with much less than that. Hitting a man size silhouette at 1000 is perfectly doable with even 9x but if you want to actually pick a spot and try to hit it, the more x the better. And yes, I do actually shoot that far lol.

I shoot a ton a lr. I would like to know why you would not have leupold ? Because they sure alot guys with mark 4, mark 5, vx 5 , 6 hd. So I'm curious on leupold. And they are several shooting the nikon 1000 .

I appreciate your input and knowledge and if and when I get around to setting another rifle up I will certainly consider the scopes you mentioned! With that said, Ive got a vari x III 4.5x14 on a 7 mag, a vari x III 6.5x20 on a 25/06, a vari x III 6.5x20 on a 300 win mag, and a vari x III 8.25x25 on a 300 ultra mag and to date Ive had ZERO problems with tracking, repeatability or return to zero. The pattern I see is that all of my optics are old. Maybe the newer Leupold stuff isn't as good?
