I put up a stand at 2pm, climbed in a little after 4 and started my hunt at 4:20. At 4:22 I shot this guy at 18 yds. He died in sight about 30 yds away. 9 pointer.

Congrats

What made you put the stand in that spot up?
Fresh sign?
You see a lot of he that you shouldn't do in season
scouting , I do it all the time, works for me

No definitely not scouting looking for sign. That's a big no no for my hunting strategies. I based my decision simply off of terrain features. This is a brand new farm I acquired late season last year. Did my scouting then but really all I focus on is terrain features. I look for funnels and pinches primarily. With that being said I couldn't help but to notice the rubs in the area which is always nice to see. I prefer to sneak in and put up stands or use climbers or even a tree saddle with climbing spikes and set up in a particular area and hunt it immediately. Sometimes a move of just 50 yards from a previous stand sight is all it takes to catch the deer sliding by your old stand sight. Of course the deer tend to win most of the time but it's the challenge that really excites me about deer hunting. 32 years of hunting and still love it as much as ever. By the way, this buck came right in over my trail I had used to get in to the location just a couple hours sooner. I hadn't showered, was wearing my everyday tennis shoes and regular clothes that haven't been washed in scent free detergent. I created another entrance to the stand once it was up. If I hadn't done this I would have jumped him coming in. Sometimes it's the little things that make the difference. Good luck to everyone!!
