My optimism

Got into stand about 20 til light and 3 does passed by with a spike in toe. 20 min later 3 more does pass by and all hell breaks loose in the thicket below me and a gooood 9 point comes out at 40 yards broadside. I raise my gun and center the crosshairs and think its early let him go theres bigger in here. Not long a 6 point wonders by then a group of 4 does alone then an hour later a lone doe. Then nothing. I sat til boredom took over and snuck out wishing i would have just shot that darn buck. Looks like rain tomorrow so Tuesday ill be back.

Well if he was a younger deer and you want a bigger one then you did no harm in letting him go...keep after em, like you said it's early, might just get a shot at a real stud.

^^^^ What Catman said. Learned long ago if you hold off on a buck, there's usually a reason. Good luck the rest of the season.

No harm, no foul. Like the old saying goes, "let em go so they can grow". Unless you're only shooting to kill and the buck is younger or smaller than what you're looking for then there's really no reason to take him out. Hopefully your trigger restraint will pay off in the end.

There are a few I regretted killing, but never one I regretted passing. I figure if I have to think about whether I want to kill or pass, it's probably not the one I want anyway. Those usually get smaller when you put your hands on them.
