My deer had a broken leg

I was deboning the 8-point that I killed on Friday when I noticed an odd bump on the lower leg bone of one of it's hind legs.

Turns out that this tough guy's leg had been broken at some point in the past. The lower part of the leg had a large knot grown in it with some strange "fins" of bone protruding out. Two of these "fins" almost surrounded one of the tendons. They certainly are some tough animals to say the least. He was walking perfectly normal and in fact had quite a few scars on his back from fighting for the ladies.

What deer can survive is remarkable. You never see any emotion on a deer when it's hurt. They may bawl but their faces are emotional blanks. They just carry on with whatever they have to deal with likes it's another day at the office. I guess this is an evolved survival technique. Any weaknesses would be seized upon by predators. Thanks for sharing.

I had a friend kill a buck from LBL years back that had obviously been hit by a car and both front legs had been broken at the knees. The deer was pigeon toed and killed while running does. It appeared he had them broken early in the year and had finally healed but how he got around at the initial time of the break is a mystery.

Back in 2001, killed a 6 pt. that had a chunk of lead inside the bone of his lower right front leg below the second joint. Looked like it was a very old wound. The lead was big enough be from a centerfire rifle or pistol. Amazing what they can take and survive predators and infection.

Amazing how he recovered from a shattered femur.

Had a neighbor shoot a 120in 3.5yo bc he had a limp.

Wish he would have said he shot a 120in 3.5yo bc he had an itchy trigger finger :)

I have a 7.5yo running around that was neck shot 3y ago by neighbors and recovered just fine (his rack didn't, however)

Killed one a couple of years ago that had a deformed rack on his right side. Nothing apparent when he walked into the food plot. Got him home and in the process of skinning him I found that his back left leg around where the tarsal gland is located was a fused solid mass of bone where it had been shattered and then healed. A little more poking around in the area and I found small pieces of lead and copper where he had been shot at least a year or two earlier. Pretty amazing that he didn't die from infection or from being pulled down by coyotes.
