Our County is having a Food Plot Contest this year and my daughter wanted to participate in it. We attended a meeting last week hosted by our county agent and TWRA. We learned about selecting a plot, measuring it, and doing soil test and building exclusion cages. They will be providing the seed, kind of a small game mix of wildflowers and such but we can adment the plot with extra seed if we choose. Ill post some pics later tonight.

That is fantastic! I hope your daughter has continued interest in
the outdoors and wildlife for years to come.

Keeping the heritage of hunting and wildlife management alive, is
of the upmost importence. There are many out there, that would
absolutely love to STOP it.

Finally got a chance to get seed in the ground this weekend. We got the Native Forb mix from our 4h agent and we supplemented it with RR corn, RR beans, brown top millet and some peredovic sunflowers. Kind of a hodge podge, but it purpose is for small game cover, but we added a little food in there as well.

Got to run by the plot right at dark, tonight, spooked two hen off the roost. I think they spooked me as much as I did them! Plot looks great, lots of growth coming out of the ground. Time for my daughter to get her exclusion cage built! We also need to top dress some more fertilizer. I guess this old poor ground just soaks this stuff up. As the plants look a little pale. Will get some more pics tomorrow.

Got a few pics tonight. Got some weeds but I hope the corn, beans ,and sunflowers will sade it out. Need to put down more fert. as well, stuff looks a little pale.

My daughter and I hustled it this afternoon to put down some fertilizer. They say good chance of rain tomorrow, so It proabably wont do anything!! We need a good slow soaker, but I got a feeling it wont happen that way.

Oh Yeah, there is some Johnson Grass in there. I was hoping the corn and sunflowers would shade it out, but since the plot is for cover and food, I dont figure it will hurt it too bad. We will see I guess?? Heres some pics from this week.
