Well, last year I decided I had to have one after seeing my cousin's 6.8 performance. I knew nothing about 6.8. I ended up building a budget rifle and once complete I had some regrets, especially after reading some online reviews.
The rifle is a 16" carbine: blem doublestar upper with a blem doublestar 1/10 sport profile barrel. Stag m16 bcg. Anderson lower with dpms lpk, hyperfire enhanced duty tigger. Double star stock kit.
After completion, I started seeing all the reviews on this barrel... Many people saying it was really a 9.5 twist, and was just too fast.
I barely got it together before deer season and never really got it dialed in. I used cousin's hand loads and got it on paper under 3", killed two deer with it.
I prematurely pulled the trigger on my next aspect of this rifle. With a shortage of components, I jumped on the military pulled bullets and cases. 90gr Speer gold dot and federal primed cases: in bulk. As I was waiting for them to come in, my barrel kept popping up in the reviews. This bullet is too short and too picky to be accurate in this barrel. Fast forward:
I get my ladder loaded. As rifle sits: non free floated hand guard, military bullets and cases, budget build. I started at 28.5gr of aa2200 and stretched her longer than most recommended: 2.285 COAL. I went 0.5gr increments to 31.5gr. I have two nodes.
29.5gr avg 2645fps 4 shot group at 0.76" @ 100yds.
30.5gr chrono quit working due to light, 4 shot group at 0.92" @ 100yds.
I could NOT be happier with this build. I'm sitting at $550 in it and shooting the cheapest 6.8 ammo you can hand load. The bullet has EXCELLENT reviews on game, and will be tested this year. Sub MOA is well beyond my expectations, and I am ecstatic with my results. Now she is getting disassembled and getting an adjustable gas block and free float hand guard, as well as getting the receiver squared. At 28.5 grains the ejects were at 3:00, but they moved forward as charge went up; nearly 1:00 at 31gr. Hoping to pick up some speed here after dialing the gas back, and maybe get lucky with a bit tighter group after the square and free float. If it stays the same I will be just as happy!
