Does anyone have any tips on loads and powder for small game and turkey hunting with a muzzleloader shotgun ? I was handed down a old T/C renegade from my dad that has been a great gun when I first got started out muzzleload hunting. But since then I have jumped on the inline band wagon and the old T/C has been sitting around collecting dust. I bought a shotgun barrel for it a few years ago but have not put it on yet. Any suggestions would be great help.

I'm assuming your Renegade barrel is the .56 caliber smoothbore that they use to make. Generally the old rule of thumb for black powder shotgun loads is to start with equal volume of powder and shot. 70 grs by volume and the same of shot(about 1 oz) might be a good starting point. 60 grs volume of shot is around 7/8 oz. You'll probably be able to find wads from one of the traditional muzzle loading supply folks. You'll just have to shoot it to find a good patterning load.

Never shot the one you have, but I use a pedersoli double barrel 12 ga. I use 80 grains of triple 7// over powder card// 1/2 inch lubed fiber wad// 1 1/2 oz of shot// for turkey. For small game I use 70 grains instead of 80. If you want to go hunting sometime let me know we will go fire them up. A pic of the lady.

It is a .54 caliber. Do you know if they still sell goex brand blackpowder? That always seemed to shoot better than the pyrodex. I have looked for it but can not find any. Sounds good trealtree. Once I get all my gear in order we should go let the poles smoke. It's has been a few years since I shot the old girl.
