Muzzleloader 8. Henry County

My biggest buck so far. Shot him at 8am when it was about 70 degrees. Didn't find him until around noon. 40 yard double lung but he didn't leave much of a blood trail. Thought I had missed him for a couple hours until my buddy showed up and help me find him. Shooting Hornady sst 250 gr. Anybody had issues with these not expanding much?

Good looking buck, congrats! I am of the opinion that muzzys just sometimes don't leave good blood trails for whatever the reason. Seems like someone has this story about each and bullet on the market each year. Some are prob more common that others though. Glad you found him

I personally feel the jacket is too thick and the lead is too hard. If you hit something hard like bone, they may expand. At smokeless speeds it may be different. Years ago I had a cva optima v2 and was shooting at my pa's old homestead. We'd shoot down the driveway as it gave us 200 yards if we wanted to stretch one out. No one lives here. Kept finding these sst Bullets in the driveway. Just the nose mashed in a little. Finally seen where they'd hit a tree and come out to the driveway. They never expanded. Just mashed the nose in a little.

No experience with the sst's. Might try shooting one at lined up water filled milk jugs, 4 should be enough, and see what the bullet looks like.

Congratulations on a great buck! I used to shoot them in my Knight and Rem. Genesis behind 100 grains of 777 loose powder. I shot a buck at 25 yards, double lung. He ran out of sight. Covered at least 150-160 yards. Only bled good the last 40 yards before piling up. Glad a saw him run 100 yards before entering the woods. I've since switched to 240 grain harvester. Better expansion than the SST.

Absolutely. First, great deer.

Second... The SST and shockwave are essentially the same bullet.
Switched to Barnes xpanders. Unreal penetration and expansion. Very good accuracy.

Never looked back. They are a great, great bullet

No blood until your within 50 yards of your deer is mourns for me with amuzzle loader shot 8 point opening day at 10 yardsonly went in never came out he only went 60 yards double lung. I've shot a few doesn't bullets always return to power belt

Congrats!! I shoot the SST in 300 grain and so far expansion has not been impressive. But i haven't had to blood track one yet cuz the shockwave just seems to drop em there I shoot em. But for sure the exit hole is not very big.
