Went fishing with fellow guide and outdoor writer, Joe DiPietro, at Mountaintown Trout near Ellijay, GA Sunday, along with friends Ed and Michael McCoy. It was a dreary, rainy day... but big trout kept things bright and cheery for us. I bested my "Personal Best" rainbow trout, X4... with a flyrod no less. :grin: If you're a flyfishing purist who fishes for the sheer enjoyment of outwitting a 7-inch wild trout, this is NOT the place for you.
 
I stayed at a cabin on Mountaintown Creek back over the Christmas holidays. It's funny - at the time I didn't know anything about it and I posted everywhere trying to find information. So your report is about 2 months late. :)

I caught a lot of fish, but most of them had been stocked the fall before. The owner of the property said that the drought last summer in North Georgia had caused the creek to get much warmer than usual, and the majority of the trout had died off. He had re-stocked in October to compensate for the losses they had in the drought. They re-stocked with some decent-sized fish though, averaging about 15 inches.

It's possible that you were on a part of the creek that was at a higher elevation and didn't lose its trout. Mountaintown creek is a pretty long stream. We were on the part near the Coosawattee River Resort, which is fairly close to the lower end. We are planning to go back for a weekend some time around April.

That ain't me, although I could have fun doing either. As long as you're catching fish I don't much care what or how.
 
B.D. ... don't know my geography over there that well, but we were on a section upstream (North) of Hwy. 52. So yea, pretty sure we were WAY upstream of where you were.
Joe said their fish can get pretty stressed in July, August heat... but they've got enough deep holes that most can holdover fairly well.
He says they've grown some fish up to eight pounds so it's clear they're holding over some fish a while to accomplish that.

Ah, Ruger, but it's just a hop & a skip down to the Hatchie Wild & Scenic River. :D

Personally, I prefer the Hatchie over the Obion.
