Turns out they don't like the TSX too much, his girlfriend had the same problem.

Thank you! Shots were at 53 yards, 11.5" barrel. I built that gun specifically for 100 yards or closer. The doe dropped in her tracks from a broadside shot into the vitals, no blood trail given she dropped instantly. For the buck, the shot was a pass through into the vitals broadside at a slightly downward angle. He ran about 50 yards up the mountain and piled up. There was an easy blood trail for the buck given the shot was a pass through and the bullet exited below the entrance. I didn't take a picture of the exit, but the projectile expansion looked like a 9mm hole. I'd use a different gun/caliber if hunting a large ag field or somewhere I knew shots would be at a longer distance.
 
How's the entrance and exit holes using a 5.56. Did you have to track it 5 counties over. Just a question my cousin was thinking about using that same bullet. But told me if you don't get a perfect shot. And or don't have big acreage to track before it go's off the property. He wouldn't feel comfortable with such a small bullet. I see the dead deer but Never doubted it could kill a deer. And I'm asking for him really. Do you really have to make a perfect shot. As not as destructive as a heavier bullet. Shot placement is important with any bullet. But bigger bullets have more collateral damage.?

The exit hole was about twice the size of a pencil eraser. He only ran 50 yards and there was a good blood trail. A shot to the vitals100 yards & in and you should be good to go. 👍 👍
 
Nice man, congratulations! Always cool to knock one (or 2) down with a gun you built. I loaded some 30 cal TSX for my 30-06 this year, very pleased with the results. Entrance and exit similar size to good ol' cup & core bullets of the same caliber. All pass thrus, so good blood. Extremely disruptive projectile in the cavity and thru shoulder. This is obviously larger than 223, but that's just a note on the TSX's for you guys that had questions.
