Missed the rain both this past weekend and today. Missed the rain today by 2 miles. Been the trend the last couple of months. Hopefully, will catch a break tomorrow. My seed needs some water!
 
Me too, I planted last Friday with rain chance on Saturday and nothing then or today. What will happen to the seed?
 
I drilled most of mine so hoping there is some soil moisture there to help get it started. Just hoping the birds don't put a dent in it. I have seen dews also get things started especially if the temperatures aren't too high. Looks like forecasted highs aren't going to be terrible.
 
If seed is drilled in and not broadcast, and if the soil is moist enough to stick together in a ball when a handful of dirt is squeezed in your hand, the seed will germinate.
 
Planting fall food plots is always a crap shoot. September is normally our driest month of the year.
 
This was not the case. I had hoped when we drilled with 2 rains in the forecast we would be golden. Looks like long term no good shots for at least 10 days.

September is always tough for our area. According to weather.com, the average precipitation for West TN/North MS in September is 3.6 inches. Thats less than July which is 4.2 inches.

We might be better off waiting til October to plant because the average picks to 4.6 inches.
 
In Middle TN, September is our driest month, while November and March our wettest months.

In fact, if you look at average daily rainfall, what is usually the opening week of gun season (Thanksgiving week) is normally one of the wettest periods of the year.
 
No real rain in the 10-day forecast.

I've successfully planted wheat and clover as late as late October.
 
October is a good month to plant, weeds are dying and less chance of any regrowth. I always plant last 12 days or so of sept. if possible and get excellent results. the earlier planting done is sept the more mixed the results and the greater the weed regrowth. Sedge grass can completely grow back to knee size is you are not careful.......just saying Good point BSK.
 
I wish I had stuck to my guns as I had initially planned on a late September early October planting. The two rains in the forecast back to back tempted so much I couldn't stand it. We haven't had any rain since I planted. Hoping we get this rain this weekend and then I am going to go in and top seed some wheat in front of the next rain.

Next year my grains wont be in the ground before the last week of September! I am going to try some brassicas next year a little early in some small spots.

I planted annual clovers in mid-August. They're struggling, but holding on in patches through this September drought. I'm glad I didn't plant my cereal grains. I'll probably plant them tomorrow (Thursday).
 
I've had about 10 acres prepped and ready to go for weeks but just don't have the moisture. I'm defiantly going to mix in some wheat to help the plots. I was also planning on planting Thursday but the forecast has dropped off that chance as well.
