Hey guys,

I am thinking about getting a .308 for next year. I already have a great rifle for shots within 300 yards. What I am looking for is a practical .308 that can reasonably stretch out to 500-700 yards when I need it to.

I have been mostly looking at Savage and was wondering what kind of .308 would be the best suited for this task? I don't mind getting a heavy barreled gun but obviously I don't want a super tactical rifle that is better suited for Afghanistan rather than the deer stand.

I am trying to find a balance between accuracy, weight, and $$$. Any help from experienced .308 shooters would be greatly appreciated.

If you'll watch the sales at your local Richard's sporting goods you can pick up a Remington 700 with heavy barrel very reasonably priced this time of year. I bought one in 22-250 a couple years ago for $399.99 and it had a decent Bushnell 4-12x40 scope on it. It was a Black Friday deal if I remember correctly.

I also saw someone on here say they got one for $425 recently.

I have 2 Rem 700 SPS Tactical rifles and love 'em. VERY accurate and not too heavy with the 20" barrel. 1 has the barrel turned down and threaded for Ops Inc suppressor but the other is still in factory config. I did replace both triggers with Timney's though.

Savage 10FP-SR is a fine deer rifle and long range shooter. look at stevens 200 also...same rifle but "sporter" barrel and $355 less ....leave more $$$ for good glass. here are 2 Savage/Stevens i use both for deer hunting long range steel plate shootin

I will second the stevens 200 I have one in 7mm-08 and for the money you cannot beat it. If you are planning on spending the extra money I have had better luck with out of the box accuracy with savage vs remington plus you get the accutrigger. I think this also more true if you don't reload. Also, if you do reload a 7mm-08 will give you better ballistic coefficient.

Model 700 XCR Tactical Long Range, Model 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD or a Remington 700 LTR if you can find one. My LTR is a tack driver. My son has a Tactical AAC-SD and it shoots cloverleaf groups.
