Mossberg S46M

This is a Mossberg S46M. Mossberg rifles with "S" designation at the beginning of the model number were made specially for the Spiegel Catalog Co. The Spiegel rifles usually had a nicer grade of wood and other upgrades such as coming with the rear peep sight and drilled and tapped for Unertl scope mounts.

Mossberg rifles with the "M" designation have full length Mannlicher stocks.
The 46M with No, 4 sight was made from 1940-45.
The 46M(a) with S100 sight from 1945-1947.
The 46M(b) with S130 sight from 1947-1952.
The sights are interchangeable between models. The (a) and (b) have longer cut outs in the stock for the base of the S100 and S130.

I've never shot his one, like several more I own. But, the bore is pristine, so I expect it to be an excellent shooter.

Yes, but when you put the "S" in front of it the "Spiegel Rifle" S46M was introduced in 41 and discontinued in 42.
