Mossberg pricing

When in the world did the cost of a Mossberg shotgun go through the roof? Had to be in Illinois this week and then over to Louisville where they have a KYGUNCO store that always try to go to. It's the least bare I've ever seen their gun shelves but what shocked me was the price of a Mossberg. They had a double barrel 20ga camo that was $875 and a 12ga for about the same. It wasn't a double barrel but my jaw hit the floor. When I started turkey hunting my first gun was a model 500 12ga and then went to the 835. Im thinking the 500 was $300 or less and the 835 not much more. I should have looked at the model #'s better so I'd know exactly what they were but guess I was so shocked I didn't.

We get things like Obama election, Covid, 2020 riots that send prices through the roof and they just never come down.
Gun dealers sell every gun they get in, so no need to have discounts.
A lot of junk has come on the market with price tags not as high as the good stuff but still pretty hefty. It appears they are popular.

I will say, Mossberg has been trying to rebrand themselves for a few years to try and get away from "cheap". They have tried to break into the higher end options with the 940 pro and others. They came out with a lot of new models that were game specific with camo stocks and features. A lot of this will drive the price up on even their bottom options to keep it in line with other brands. There is still some value in those new models and options but it hurts the low end options price point. Also from an overhead stand point when you are now making and supporting a lot more models you have to raise the price on everything to cover all those new costs.

I bet it will happen soon. It took awhile on handguns, but when it started they all got on the bandwagon pretty quick.

It doesn't cost much to add it during manufacturing, but it's costly to have someone do it later.

I 've got a Mossberg 500 camo with 24" barrel. Came with two chokes. It was $211.00 at Kmart in the early 1990's. I've killed about 30 birds with it.

I got a Mossberg 500 with a 24" rifled barrel I bought when I lived in Illinois.
Paid $169.00 for it new.
Came with a Bushnell scope.
Rattles like a baby toy.

The grand opening of academy sports in rivergate they had maverick 88's for $99 and 835's for $199. I got one of the 835's and my cousin got the last 88 they had

I've only owned one Mossberg in my life. It rattled like a can of spray paint and patterned like a blunderbuss.

I owned an 835 when they first came out. Just didn't like it as much as a Remington 870. The only advantage was 3.5 shells so I picked up a Benelli. Haven't owned another Mossberg since.

I bought an 870 express for $300 about 25 or so years ago. Looks like they're running about $500 on gunbroker now.

$300 then has the buying power of $600 now… maybe that's part of why Big Green went belly up?

I had a Mossberg 835 and then a Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge both guns would pattern with the best of them for Turkey hunting. Am I ever glad I don't have that 835 with the 3.5 shells anymore, I am too old for that pain! Lol

I also bought a Mossberg in the early 90's, and while it wasn't "a beaut Clark" it was very functional and killed many a turkey. I switched to a Mossberg 930 around 2010 and haven't owned another shotgun other than the Charles Daly youth 20ga for wife and kids. Very pleased with the results if not the aesthetics of my guns.

I bought an 835 from a buddy about 25 years ago. He was having issues with the slide. I took it home, cleaned it for probably the first time in its life, and it has been flawless since.

I've set up a 935 and then a 500 Bantam 20 gauge for turkey and both of them shot lights out...ultimately I sold the 935 when I bought the 500 and then I sold the 500 to go with an 870 youth 20 for turkey.

The Mossbergs are great, functional guns but the 935 was just plain heavy to tote (and a 3.5" 12 gauge is essentially unnecessary with the advent of TSS) and then the rattling of the 500 just bugged me...it never impacted hunting success but it just bothered me....I actually liked the fact that both were drilled and tapped and prefer tang safety on the Mossbergs for turkey hunting purposes though...wish the 870 had a tang safety.

Right- if the 870 had that option for the safety, it'd be one of my favorites.

It's a great setup for left handed shooters.
