I noticed this gun would chocolate chip cookie the hammer when pumped but not send a shell in the barrel on occasion when we were duck hunting( with 28" barrel). It was fast shooting/pumping so the only thing I could think was the magazine spring was getting weak. Mossberg loctites the mag tube so I had to put a heat gun on the tube to get it loose. I got a wolff extra power spring on the way and when I get it in Ill shoot some skeet to see how it does. Just an FYI incase anybody runs into a similar problem.

It's a known issue that Mossberg uses old paper clips for their mag springs (joking, but pretty close) it's one of the major weaknesses of the gun. The Wolff spring will make a noticeable difference.

We had to take a pipe wrench to 1 while on a hunt at a wma 30 years ago, it was all I could do to hold it while my brother took the shell tube off, rusty as all get out, wd40 and some elbow grease and back to normal. He killed a deer with it the next morning.

I have no idea why they loctite them? If anything needs regular cleaning on a shotgun it's the magazine tube. Some lawyer probably made them do it.

Got the new spring … and yep, the old one was shot. I won't be able to pump the gun faster than the spring will have the fresh shell ready to close. $14.00 fix and done, that's why I love the 500. No gunsmith , no searching for parts, just fix it and keep going.

Shooting skeet won't be a great way to validate your repair because the recoil will be much less. I hope it fixes the issue either way.
