They are wicked fun to shoot minus the fact they have a steel butt plate instead of a recoil pad. I remember being able to buy 7.62x54mm ammo $20 for 200rnds of FMJ. I had 2 at one time. Both were carbines with bayo's. Also had a turkish 8x57mm mauser at one time that shot pretty good.
 
Savage made a lot of those Mosin Nagants in WW-I and the U.S.A. made a lot of the AMMO for Russia during WW-II for lend lease .
Winchester made a bunch of 1895 rifles in 7.62 x 54 Russian Nagant also.
 
got 2 of 'em and will be adding more. I got my 03 FFL for 30.00 which allows me to buy direct from wholesalers for as low as 59.00 for a 91/30 mosin. Currently have a M38 and a M44. Both are fine shooters and will go to the deer woods. The 7.62x54r cartridge is comparable to the 30-06 and there are several hunting loads out there. I warn you though, if you get one, more will soon follow you home.
 
My first deer rifle was a "sporterized" Mosin Nagant.

Simple, sturdy, reliable, and capable of good accuracy. Slightly less powerful than the .308 Win.

Downside: No safety. Scope must be side-or "scout"-mounted. Factory hunting ammo can be expensive and hard to find. Reloading possible but a pain.

For hunting I think they best serve as a relatively inexpensive "utility" rifle of decent power and accuracy with iron sights under conditions we would not want to subject a more expensive rifle to.
 
I considered one for a while, but could not find ammo anywhere local. It is easy to find on net, but most is corrosive, which isn't a huge deal. It can be purchased in bulk for 10 cents per round. These rounds are usually non-reloadable. After looking a into it I opted for a 8mm K98 Mauser instead.

I like the carbine version due to its shorter length. The full size is way too long. My Carbine shoots the Winchester white box pretty good at a fair price and its reloadable :)
 
They are generally rugged, reliable, somewhat crude, and can be reasonably accurate depending on the rifle. They do have a safety but it is difficult to operate. The 7.62x54r is a .308 equivalent round or maybe more. The shorter ones are handier and make a good utility rifle. Some were made by Remington and Westinghouse for the Tzars before the commies kicked them out. I don't recall Savage making any but they may have. Most are reworked Russian/Soviet/Chinese rifles. Some Russian ones were captured in the RussoFinnish war and reworked by the Finns and are generally considered the more desirable MNs.
