If I get some sawtoothes to put in this area, will the regrowth out run them?

I planted 4 sawtooths from a local nursery that were 4 feet tall 3 winters ago in a little clear cut type area just like you have there with stumps and all still in it just as a experiment. They have only grown about 1 foot, there is tall timber on nearly every side. The growth back from those stumps will be very strong unless you treated them. Ill keep clearing the brush back off those 4 of mine every year just to continue the experiment and I probably will evenutally get producing trees but Im betting it will be 20 plus years.

Thats one of the best saws you can buy..

as far as the trees go.. the roots from the cut down trees will still take away from your new trees.

If you had a place that was kinda bushy type, you should plant them in that area. With our trees, we noticed that a tree out in the open will get much more wind burn and damage. The trees in the woods will have a better look to them.

I would just leave it as is and dont worry about planting trees. Another rainy year and that will be a nice thicket for next season.
