Just thinking out of the box.....


I have never used decoys during deer hunting, but am not opposed to trying it....

One never knows until one tries.....lol.
 
I used a bow target as a decoy before, had a couple of bucks come out to it, the smaller one walked over and smelled it and the bigger one ran over and they started fighting, neither deer was a shooter but it was a cool experience.
 
I'm ready to get in to new things. I've done things the same way for many years and had some degree of success, but I'd like to try decoys, more calling and maybe a few more untried tactics..

The reason for this thought is that I have watched deer in fields move toward other deer, even if it meant traveling a long way across a field. Deer are most often social animals. i can't see where a decoy or two would hurt anything....especially in a big field...

camofire had those decoys on sale the other day...what do they normally run?

I've wanted to use decoys. Every year I think to myself it seems there is that 1-2 week window where you could get a decoy to really work

doe decoys are 80 while bucks are about 100.

abit pricey for flat decoys......but I guess if they work????

My intent is to place them in plain view in a 50 acre bean field.

There are way too many trails coming in to the field to cover more than a couple of them, so maybe the decoys will bring a rutting buck abit closer, at least within range of my MZ or 270.

I'm not a long range shooter.....the closer , the better. lol
 
I have used one of the plastic deer decoys several times but they seemed to spook does. Another issue was noise and convenience, to much trouble. The Montana decoys would sure be much easier to transport and set up. I noticed that Tink's offers an inflatable doe decoy (realistic looking) that can be placed in a standing or bedded position for around $45.00. Have seen them at Academy Sports.
 
Just bought a Flambeau decoy..

I'not concerned with deer spooking simply because I don't figure they will be close enough to be spooked...

My intent is to draw a curious buck closer, across an open field....Once he gets in to easy gun range, it's on.

I'd never try this is a close quarters situation. I can see how a stationary decoy might spook a wise old doe....But, a rut crazed buck might just wander over to take a look....we'll see.

I sold that decoy a couple of weeks ago in a garage sale for $35.00. It had one ear missing. Hope I won't regret getting rid of it during deer season. Just needed to clear out some room in the basement. Good luck with yours!!!
