ML Trouble :(

Guys, I can't seem to get my Traditions ML to fire! It fires once then it doesn't matter how many times I try. It pops the primer and then nothing.

I took the breech plug out, cleaned it very well. Then I popped a few primers through it. Reloaded the rifle and still noting. I'm using Triple 7 pellets and Winchester 209 primers. The primers don't seem to has a much pop as I remember from the Remington Primers.

I just bought the powder, but it could be bad. I bought some Pyrodex to try tomorrow, and I'm going to get some new primers too. I'm really frustrated. I've missed three deer so far due to problems with both of my rifles. My TC can't hit minute of trash can lid. I'm using Hornady 300 grain bullets in my Traditions.

Any suggestions? The breech plug is soaking overnight in gas just in case that is it.

You should switch to 90-100 grains Blackhorn 209 loose powder and CCI Magnum 209 primers. Problem solved. If you like 777 powder I suggest you use it in loose form also.

Have you checked the nipple? Sometimes a small fragment from the primer can get in the nipple hole and stop the flame going to the powder. Its also possible that the powder could be old and hard to ignite. I've never liked pellets. I always use loose powder.

This is what I do, right or wrong, and outside. On an empty barrel I will run a dry patch all the way to the breech plug and leave it. Then with the patch and ram rod still in the barrel ill burn a cap threw it. I use the winchester primers and it will usually make the ramrod come up 3 to 4 inches. A hotter primer may make the ramrod come out? that I don't know. Ill then pull the dry patch out and see what kind of burn pattern I'm getting on the patch. You should be able to see daylight threw your breech also.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got rid of the Winchester Primers and went back to Remington primers. That seemed to end the problem with poor ignition. The Remington Primers make a nice black mark on a white piece of paper while the Winchesters barely darken it.

Now I've got to figure out a place to shoot in the morning before I get in the stand. I don't want to scare them off, but I'm not going to sit all day just to miss again!

I do the same. The patch is usually nearly completely burned up, or at least a big hole burned thru it. This is using Rem KleanBore primers too btw.

Ditto after cleaning I always burn a patch or 2 before loading up. Same thing in the field if I have time. Spit on a patch ram it and pop a cap. pull it out and pop another one. The times were few and far between but I've had that 2nd shot not go off for a 2nd deer .
