Six years ago I bought a TC omega and mounted a 3-9x40 Monarch UCC on top. Accurate out to over 200 yards and I took a lot of deer with it.
However, I had to estimate holdover with the plex reticle....which, gave me reluctance to take longer shots.
I came across on a great deal on the recently discontinued swarovski AV 3-10x42 ml reticle. The reticle is more open than the plex, and has hash's that are perfectly aligned to the load. So zero at 100, and I have hash's out to 300. Also better quality glass allows for more effective shooting time within legal hours.
The problem: the vast majority of my shots are under 125 yards, so it is rare that I use the hash marks. And the more open reticle is a bit slower coming on target and less accurate at about 100 yards. This year I shot a couple of deer, on different occasions, at the end of my effective shooting light and the shots were less than perfect (both deer easily recovered, just not the peferect shot).
I am struggling with which scope to use. If I could have the better glass in the plex I would take that in a heartbeat. And the hash marks pay someday pay off on a distance shot on the buck of a lifetime. But I like the plex for quick shots. Which is the better choice?
