Was real pumped to hunt yesterday and today. Got off work on Friday, and was in a good spot...so I thought. Didn't see the first deer. Scouted around on this new property and found some good rut stand sites for the property owner and his son. I don't get to gun hunt there. Went back out in the afternoon, and saw my first doe at 330. She was hammering the acorns under a white oak next to a creek. Had I know this tree was dropping I would have put my stand closer! As it was, I watched her at 40-50 yards for over an hour. Finally at about 530 a group of does/yearlings comes down the trail heading right past me to that oak tree. Wind swirls and poof they're gone. Sit till almost dark and spook another deer climbing down. Walk out and into a field about 100 yards away and there's six more deer! For me, that's a lot of deer in one night!
Got off work early today, and was set up 20 yards from that white oak, ready for the action. 330, 430, 530...nothing! I'm thinking maybe not today, when I hear one behind me heading for the field on a different trail. I get turned around in my stand and only one shooting lane. She steps into it and I stop her, shoot and miss clean as a whistle. Well crap. Nock another arrow, and maybe a minute later three more come down the same trail. Lead doe steps into lane, stop her, shoot, and draw some belly fur. Double crap!! I gave in and climbed down to step it off, and I was right on my distance, so I'll need to shoot tomorrow to see if something happened on the bow.
This property and the neighboring two properties (all together 300 acres or so) are loaded with deer, at least with does and yearlings. I drive by them often year round, and see deer all year. Rarely do I sees buck. Is this what I've heard called a doe sink? Bucks will be here come the rut won't they?
