But the second hit the mark. Sent one into the dirt and he just looked at me....didn't flinch. Mind on one thing. The doe 50 yds down the trail from him. I was able to work the lever on the old Marlin 336 and chamber another round. The second shot knocked him down but he got right back up and took off into the thick. I was unsure at this point whether the hit was good considering my first attempt was a whiff. 60-70yds through a bit of brush with the Williams peep was probably pushing my ability with this gun but I thought I was steady. Guess buck fever had set in. I've been wanting to shoot a deer with this 35 Remington for quite awhile now. I loaded some 200 gr cast lead bullets over a mild charge of Varget and had her dialed in at 50 yds. Our very own Hunter257 casts these flat nose slugs from lead wheel weights and sent me some in the mail last year to try out. Thanks once again! The old buck still made it about 80 yds after the shot. Had trouble finding any blood until about 30-40 yds down the trail then he just started pouring. Looked like a murder scene for the second half of the track. Entrance in front of shoulder and exit behind the offside. Big bodied buck. Tall and good mass. Very unique rack. Couldn't be more pleased with my first buck with this gun. Got to love the simplicity. Although I need to shoot it on paper once again. Surely I didn't flat out miss with the first shot. I don't get buck fever...ha. That's what keeps me coming back I guess. Will make a cool Euro mount. Interested to pull the jaw bone.
How much did that beast weight?? I know what you mean about buck fever. I never know when it's going to sneak up and grab me. I hope to get to use one of those bullets on a deer soon. I put up a brush blind in a corner of my woods that I've seen bucks use to sneak in and out checking for does but waiting for a "just right" wind to try it. The shot shouldn't be over 50 yards so my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington is going to be with me with those same bullets.
