Well I'm not used to shooting that far. Had a pretty steady aim lying prone, but suspect I wasn't steady enough. Had 3 deer roughly 250 yards. I know it's 300 to the other side of field but they had come towards me.

Maybe next time I'll carry a shooting stick or a cushion just in case. Gonna watch the video when I get home, the doe acted like she may have been hit but I looked 1 1/2 hours with no sign other than tracks.

rangefinder is a great tool for long shot

range deer 241 yds

go to field range back to tree 241 yds find deer or blood

especially in tall grass
it was cut corn and I was lying prone but had to prop the gun up a little with my arm to see over the stalks. I found a couple sets of tracks where the deer headed to the woods, checked every row of corn more than once and searched the ground for blood all up and down the fence row and then combed the woods for a while.

I'm bringing something for a more steady rest next time I hunt an open field, just to be sure. Heck I'm glad I saw some deer this evening, wasn't really expecting to

Maybe you hit a stalk but a prone shot at 250yards is a good poke.

Sounds about like the shot I took the other night, but it was a little shorter. I was around 210-220 and flat fields. Propped the gun up on my fist to steady while prone. If I had been about an inch higher I'd have shot over him.

Contrary to all the talk nowadays about long range shooting, it's VERY easy to miss a shot at 250 yards and most shooters don't have much of a chance hitting a deer at that range. It's nothing to feel bad about. Practice practice practice is the only way for most of us to improve our rifle shooting ability. That's something I don't do enough of lately!

Why take a shot you weren't confident in?

That's a loaded question that sounds simple - "Don't ever take a shot you don't know you can make." But it's not that simple. I've shot a ton in the past and it's real easy to miss a shot. I used to shoot 2 Silhouette matches every week and although I was a lot more confident with my shooting because of all that shooting, it still didn't make it impossible to miss a shot. I agree that it's not ethical to take s shot at a range where you know it would only be wild luck to make a hit (which I think all this interest in long range shooting is fueling in recent years) but as much as Catman hunts and shoots, I doubt that 250 yards is such a high risk shot for him.

It wasnt meant to be a loaded question. Just a question.

I'd venture to say he was off on his yardage or hold and shot under it. 308 starts to dive somewhere in the 275 yard range depending on bullet weight and barrel length.

And my comment wasn't meant in a negative way towards you in any way. :) You could very well be right about misjudging the range or it could just be a wobble right at the moment the trigger was pulled. I know I've never been able to hold a crosshair rock steady in my life.

Hope the footage gives you some answers. At 250 your .308 is down, what... 7 inches?

Recently,I shot at a deer I thought was at 250 based on some pre-ranging I had done, but I had miscalculated and she was actually at 300.

That bullet drops another 7 inches from 250 to 300!!!

From what I've seen on some of your entrance wound pics, you tend to aim lower quadrant, 3-4 inches above the bottom of the chest.

If you held for 250, and she was at 280, that bullet dropped about 4 more inches than you held for...
no I was aiming mid to high shoulder, it was less than 300 yards for sure because I know it's 300 across the field. I zeroed the gun at 200 yard which is supposed to put the bullet about 5" low at 300. So it shouldn't have been more than a couple inches low. I suspect I did not have a steady enough rest and will make sure I do next time.

Don't worry about it too much catman. A couple seasons back I missed a deer at 235 yards at 7:55 am. The very next morning I missed the same deer within 10 yards and 5 minutes of the same spot and time. I just laughed like a lunatic after the second miss.

Next time try sitting with your elbows propped on the inside of your knees.Pretty steady position and you can see better probably. On the rifle team you had to shoot sitting at 200 yards. Easy to get into . At my age its harder to get up than it used to be though.
